Friday night carnage in Muse & Sky Nightclubs, Shanghai

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!!

It is now Tuesday afternoon, and it has taken me this long to put myself back together after a slightly OTT Friday night in a couple of Shanghai Clubs. The scary thing i find here with my company is that there are many staff members who are worse boozers than me. And when i say “worse” i mean “enthusiastic”.

If the truth be known, i have not drunk so much since i have been over here in China, and so the shock of friday’s behaviour was even greater. Generally i have rejected offers of perties and clubs to save a little cash for my travelling with Ruby, which is of more importance to me at the moment. I know i can go to clubs and bars as much as i like back home, but trips to the Chinese countryside i can only do here. As well as i have done to avoid such boozy places, Friday was a bad relapse, but i guess inevitable, considering my behaviour over the years. I certainly behaviour better now that i am here with Ruby each weekend, but its always hard not to go back to your old bad self once in a while!

I eventually returned to my flat at about 10.30am the next morning, after crashing out at a surprise location – more on that later. This was my first major club night since i have been in Shanghai, and, to be honest, my last for a while too. The damage of the past few days has been too great and put me a LOT of drinking for the time being. The days of light hangovers are well behind me now, unfortunately. A combination of red wine, Baileys and Red Bull Vodkas put me well out of action. Not only could i not eat properly for two days, but i also damaged my eye. This is now under repair thanks to a trip to the local Chinese hospital and their supply of eye drops.

I had hoped to never have the experience of a Chinese hospital, particularly after turning down health insurance for a small lump sum from work, but in the end i had to go to get m eye checked out. It now seems to be on the mend, and the hospital experiences were not really any worse than what i would get in UK. The doctor in the first hospital was admittedly disinterested in the extreme, which is why i went back for a second opinion two days later. People always feel happier if they are given something to take, whether it is necessary or not, and i am no different. I was later told that public doctors often seem disinterested, and not to take it personally. Both hospitals were decidedly modern and clean and i will not have such trepidation if i have to return again.
